4 Tips on Finding the Best HVAC Contractors

3/9/2019

If you go online and search for HVAC contractors near me in Houston, thousands of contractor links will come up. This doesn’t help you much because you’ll have too many to choose from making it hard to know which one to call. In this post, we’re going to help you with tips to find the best residential contractors in your area.

Four Tips to Find the Best Residential HVAC Contractors Near me

Your heating and cooling system is complex. It's vital when you’re searching for and hiring residential HVAC contractors that the company you choose has technicians who are well-trained in dealing with safety issues such as natural gas, oil, and electricity for your furnace; and air conditioning units that use toxic refrigeration substances like Freon.

1.  Use Your Zip Code to Search: When you’re typing in HVAC Contractors near me, add your zip code in the search bar. This will bring up all contractors in your area with website or business information posted online. This will significantly narrow down your search making it easier to focus on the important stuff that comes next.

2.  Experience and Safety Come First: Of course, education is mandatory, but there are also strict licensing requirements, and contractors need a certain amount of on-the-job training. Back in the day before residential air conditioning was common, the job title was simply “furnace repair.” Since then ventilation has become a technology of its own. HVAC contractors must have a complete understanding of airflow through heating ducts, electrical wiring, combustion, and refrigerant systems. After your search for residential HVAC contractors near me, make sure the businesses you consider have the proper work and safety experience.

Death or injury can occur from situations such as carbon monoxide poisoning from an improperly maintained ventilation and exhaust system. Contractors that come up from your HVAC contractors near me search must be experts when it comes to safety.

3.  Insurance and Bonding: Along with education, on-the-job work experience, and licensing requirements, a company that comes up after your search for residential HVAC contractors should also have at least a minimum level of insurance and bonding. In fact, any professional that works in your home should have liability insurance to protect you in case of accidental damage or injury.

4.  Testimonials: After you’ve chosen a few promising contractors following your search for residential HVAC contractors near me, check out their website. After looking at their “About” page, which should list essential information such as education and licensing, they should have a “testimonial” page where other customers let you know what to expect from their services.  You can also do a random online search for the name of the company and ratings.

When you’re searching for residential HVAC contractors near me the first thing to look for are HVAC contractors in your area because you want one that is close to where you live in case of an emergency. If your furnace breaks down or your air conditioner dies in the dead of summer when its 86 degrees, you’ll want service quickly. As with everything you also want the best service provider you can find. So, don’t forget to do your research.

11 most Common Air Conditioning Repairs

3/8/2019

Paying taxes, driving in traffic and A/C repair are all inevitabilities of life here in the city. Houston is an incredibly difficult climate to condition; due to high humidity. Essentially, we have heavier air than other parts of the United States. Refrigerant has a pressure-temperature correlation. Air-Conditioning, in this application, is the achievement of human-comfort. With these things in mind, let's dive into the most common air-conditioning repairs.

  1. Dirty Filters - a dirty filter will drag air slower across your evaporator coil and will lower the DAS (discharge air temperature). Slower air pressure will lower refrigerant temperatures.
  2. Thermostat- mercury bulb thermostats must installed level and be secure on a load-bearing wall; digital thermostats can fail at anytime, but in our experience, they fail mostly in the side seasons. I don't like recommending digital thermostats programmed for a heating and cooling parameter; Instead, choose heat or cool.
  3. Refrigerant Leaks- These can occur at anytime and often present themselves prematurely due to improper start-up practices. Did you know that if an air conditioner is under-charged by twenty-five percent, it can result in 50% more energy consumption!
  4. Drain clogs- High-humidity means high moisture content in the air. Relative humidity in the air must be removed before the sensible temperature of your thermostat will lower. On a typical summer-day in Houston, a 5 ton air-conditioner can remove 25 gallons of water from the air. This cold water then is discharged into a 3/4 inch pvc drain-line. Sign up for ac maintenance to get your drains cleared on a consistent basis!
  5. Evaporator Coils- this part of the air-conditioner is what traps the water vapor in the air and condenses it. It's made of copper and aluminum. This part will eventually fail because of these two facts. To ensure it lasts longer, make sure your HVAC company is practicing proper vacuuming of the system before start-up and keep your AC at a consistent temperature to ensure unnecessary humidity removal (over-working the ac).
  6. Breakers or Fuses- I've seen dogs chew wires that pop fuses, squirrels and rats too! Power surges can trip breakers. A "on" breaker in your panel box should never be warm/hot, I have a great master electrician friend that can help!
  7. Capacitors- essentially, the battery for compressor, out-door fan motor and indoor blower motor. This is the part customers always think is the problem! Haha! I find it funny when I go to a service call and then the customer belittles my trade-knowledge by saying "it's probably the capacitater". A good technician will smile at you, and follow the sequence of operations to determine problem, every time.
  8. Compressor- the "heart' of the AC system, can fail from lack of refrigerant, being un-level, running with a bad capacitor, improper installation practices, dirty filters and restrictions of refrigerant flow to name a few. Very expensive! Get ac maintenance!
  9. Condenser Coils- this is what stores the heat energy that the evaporator coil removed from your home.  The condenser coil can fail from dog urine, weed eaters and degradation of metallic surfaces.
  10. Worn Contactor- the contactor is essentially a magnet that opens and closes. In maintaining the magnetic field a frequency is emitted; this frequency can attract ants and dirt-dobbers, which can prevent the contactor from closing. Mechanical failure can happen at anytime.
  11. Poor Breaker panel balancing-  If your main breaker panel for your home is not load balanced it can wear our mechanical parts faster and make you spend more money each month on electricity. Thor Electric is the company I refer to all my customers in Houston and surrounding areas.

Three Reasons Why it is Important to Call Your Air Conditioning Repair Company

3/8/2019

It may be nearing the end of winter, but it is still important to think about the wellbeing of your air conditioner, as even during the winter it helps regulate your businesses temperatures inside. However, do you realize that to keep your AC in top working order you need to keep an air conditioning repair company on hand to properly maintain it? Moreover, what happens if it breaks down randomly, or stops functioning as well as it used to? You may need emergency 24 hour AC repair in Katy, so you need to ensure that you have someone you can call that is reliable and will be available immediately to service your HVAC systems.

Your AC Unit Won’t Turn on or Stay On

If your AC unit quits in the middle of the day, it can cause your business to become very uncomfortable for employees or customers. However, your AC could also quit in the middle of the night, and you’ll need a company that can do 24 hour AC repair in Katy to make sure you have as little downtime with your business as possible. Since it's not only in the summer you are going to need your AC system, it’s important to have a repair company ready to serve you immediately. It’s also important to call your air conditioning repair company if your AC isn’t staying on as long as it should maintain the ideal temperature for your building. Not staying on the right length of time is a sign that something is wrong with your system, which could range from a thermostat problem to damaged refrigerant lines, or even the compressor being burnt out. The extra bonus of 24 hour AC repair is that you can schedule the repair for your businesses off hours (like overnight.)

Energy Bills are Increasing

As an AC system starts to age and isn’t properly maintained, it costs more and more money to operate. As it becomes less efficient, it runs longer just to maintain the same temperature you have always set, and the longer it runs the more money you are wasting. You should be keeping the record of your electricity each month, and if you notice a sharp increase, it may be time to call your 24 hour AC repair company in Katy to schedule maintenance to ensure your AC is functioning normally.

AC Making Strange Noises or Leaks Water

Has your AC started making strange noises any time it turns on, or while it is operating? Maybe you have noticed water pooling below it or causing water damage to your building. These are important signs that you should be contacting a 24 hour AC repair in Katy company to come check your system for issues before the problems escalate. Strange noises and leaking water could be signs of blocked or disconnected tubes, loose screws, damaged fan blades, or blower motor issues; all of which can be fixed quickly by professional HVAC technicians.

When does Your AC Need a Duct Replacement?

3/7/2019

Think of your AC ducts like your home’s circulatory system. For your home to be cooled efficiently, the AC ducts need to be functional and have the ability for cold air to pass through, without it leaking out. When AC ducts get old and can no longer be repaired or patched, you may want to think about replacing them. Priority AC in Houston can help repair or replace your AC ducts, saving you money each month.

How old are your AC ducts?

The maximum lifespan of AC ducts can range between 20– 25 years; however, most AC ductwork will begin to show signs of deterioration around the 15-year mark. Depending on the quality of the materials used when the home was built, your AC ducts may need replacement sooner than later. Regardless, if your home is between 10 – 15 years old and the AC ducts have never been replaced, you may want to consider investing in AC duct replacement in Houston. Let Priority AC inspect your ductwork to see if replacement is the right solution for you and your home.

Check airflow around the house

Experiencing hot and cold spots in your home? This is not a good sign - if there are inconsistencies in the way your home is being cooled, do a thorough walkaround and see if the airflow is consistent in each room. Old ducts can create drafts and, if this is the case, you may have an issue with your AC ducts and need to replace them. We can come to your home and check airflow quality to determine if we need to do AC duct replacement in your Houston home.

Signs that you should replace your AC ductwork

If you find that your home is not being adequately cooled when the AC is on, or you have signs of poor air quality, then it’s time to consider AC duct replacement in Houston. Old AC ducts will deteriorate over time, causing the ducts to leak and produce gaps and/or holes. This, in turn, allows pollens, dust, and other allergens to easily pass through and into the air you breathe. Read our indoor air quality blogs here >>>houston-is-getting-sick.html
If you hear strange noises coming from your ducts, this could be indicative of damaged or dirty ductwork. Don’t ignore the sounds, call Priority AC in Houston and let us check it out.

Another tell-tale sign that you may need to replace your AC ducts is unusually high utility bills. Why continue paying more each month? Let Priority AC in Houston help you lower your monthly costs.

How much does it cost to do an AC duct replacement?

When it comes to home improvement, no one wants to spend money unnecessarily. However, when it comes to your AC ducts, this becomes necessity vs. “a nice to have.” Poorly functioning AC ducts have both financial and health consequences for you and your family. It costs more money to run a defective, old AC unit with poor ductwork. When there are issues with your AC ducts, you could be paying for a system that wastes money. Priority AC Houston wants to help and has solutions to fit your budget, saving you money in the long-term.
